Sense of Time

Exhibit explores the ancient measurement devices of Asian Fire Clocks.

Incense has played such an important role in so many aspects of daily life in East Asia from the most ancient times and formed part of so many functions, that it is not surprising that it was eventually used for time measurement.  The regular burning of incense has been used for chronological measurement in incense clocks. These devices can range from a simple trail of incense material calibrated to burn in a specific time period, to elaborate and ornate instruments with bells or gongs, designed to involve and captivate several of the senses.

This collection assembled by the late James Kallison of San Antonio, Texas, during the last quarter of the 20th Century.
